Annual Greek Independence Day Run and Walk

We have celebrated Greek Independence Day with our Greek Independence Day Run around the shores of Oakland's scenic Lake Merritt on or near March 25th each year since 1994. We celebrate the American and Greek traditions of democracy, freedom and athletic excellence.

The event begins with the Presentation of the Colors by a platoon of the United States Marine Corp followed by the American and the Greek National Anthems.

We organize numerous competitions for various levels and interests: the 10k run, the 5k Run, a 10k Walk, and a 5k Walk, as well as the Family Walk. Yes, we organize competitions that include families as well as individuals.

The registration fee entitles each competitor to an assigned number, a commemorative T-shirt, and a certificate of participation. Laurel wreaths and medals are awarded to the winners of each competition.

Afterwards, spanakopita, feta cheese, olives, kouloura, desserts, beverages, and fresh oranges are enjoyed in the spring sunshine in the Lakeside Park by everyone present at the event, observers as well as the competitors.

This annual event has become a fund raiser for the Ascension Historical Society (AHS).

It continues to improve and expand due to the generosity of the event's organizers, sponsors, donors, and participants.
