Veterans Commemoration
A commemoration honoring veterans, both men and women, of all of the Military Services of the United States and its allied countries was organized by the Ascension Historical Society (AHS) for the first time in November 2000.
The event began with a mnymosynon (memorial service) at the conclusion of the Divine Liturgy in the Cathedral of the Ascension for those who had made the supreme sacrifice. A luncheon followed in the cathedral's community center for our invited guests and for all parishioners. We exhibited archival photographs of veterans from the Civil War to the present day.
Our second Veterans Commemoration took place on November 2002. It was preceeded by an appeal for veterans records. During the event, we expanded our exhibit. We also displayed the Soldier Statue sculpted by artist Andrew Saffas which was destined to be unveiled in Greece in 2005.
