Interactive Workshop on Photography, Video, and the Importance of Preserving Family Histories
The San Francisco Metropolis and the Historical Societies of Oakland and San Francisco Present an Interactive Workshop on Photography, Video, and the Importance of Preserving Family Histories.
Time, Place, Cost
Time:
The workshop will be held on Saturday, May 2nd, 2009, from 11 am - 6 pm. Light refreshments will be served throughout the day.
Place:
Annunciation Cathedral in San Francisco (map).
Cost:
A donation of $5 or more is suggested to defray costs.
Workshop Events:
Presentations by Greek American Authors
The workshop will start off with presentations from two brilliant Greek American authors, Jason Mavrovitis and Irene Kacandes. Mr. Mavrovitis and Mrs. Kacandes recently published books relating to their own family histories.
Sessions of Photography and Video
There will be a session on photography and another on video. You will receive a lot of useful tips on taking photographs and filming relatives for documenting your own family history. Members of our audience will be photographed and filmed during the presentations.
There will be a session on creating family albums. Family albums can be digital and displayed on the internet, and are quite useful for sharing photographs with friends and relatives. Karyn Kambur, a professional archivist, will go over useful tips and techniques for the creation and sharing of family albums.
Genealogy Research
We will also cover the topic of genealogy research in America and Greece. A member of the Greek Consulate will be speaking on genealogy research in Greece.
Display of Historical Photographs
There will be a display of historical photographs from the collections of the historical societies of Oakland and San Francisco. You are also welcome to visit the cathedral's parish museum.
Other Authors in Attendance
In addition to our speakers, there will be other authors in attendance such as Carol Jenson, who wrote a wonderful book on the history of Byron Hot Springs and another on the Mission of St. Paul. Books will be available for sale and the authors in attendance will be signing copies of their books for you.

Petrakos Films will be videotaping this workshop. You will be a part of history! A DVD will be made of the workshop, archived, and be available for purchase through Petrakos Films.
