Castle Garden ("Kastigari") 1855-1890

Castle Garden served as New York Harbor's immigration station from 1855 to 1890. Castle Garden was once a fort and theater. The immigrants were interviewed in the Rotunda or Great Hall.

There were many who took advantage of the immigrants, and it was found to be operated by unscrupulous people who stole their money and possessions. After its closure in 1890, it reopened in 1906 as an aquarium.
