Ellis Island ("Kastigari") 1892-1954

At Ellis Island, immigrants were first processed in the so-called Barge Office up until 1892, then in the main facility until the fire in 1897. The new building which opened on December 17, 1900, featured intricate stonework characteristic of the French Renaissance design period.

After proceeding under the awning, the first immigrants went through their initial inspection in the main building. Between 1892 and 1954, 12 million newcomers passed through Ellis Island.
