New Smyrna Colony, 1763-1777, The first large colony of Greeks

  • 1763:
    • European wars ended:
      • Spain: regained Cuba.
      • Great Britain: East Florida from Spain.

Following the end of the European Wars in 1762 and the signing of the Treaty of Paris in 1763, the vast territories in North America west, north, and south of the colonies were divided among the countries of Spain, France, and Great Britain.

This resulted in an exchange of Cuba for East Florida between Great Britain and Spain, following which King George III offered land grants to entrepreneurs who were willing to settle East Florida with European people.
